Description
Born in 1955 in San Rafael, California, Christian Marclay is a composer, musician and visual artist. Long associated with John Zorn, Elliott Sharp, Butch Morris and the Kronos Quartet, he is inspired among others by Joseph Beuys, John Cage and the Fluxus movement. From his beginnings in music, Christian Marclay has been influenced by contemporary art and the challenges of questioning the traditional values of art.
The works of Christian Marclay are widely exhibited, notably at the Museum of Modern Art in San Francisco (2001), the Pompidou Centre in Paris (2000, 2002, 2003), the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles (2003), the Seattle Art Museum, the Tate Modern in London, the Palais de Tokyo (2004), the Barbican in London (2005), the Museum of Modern Art in Stockholm (Moderna museet - 2006) and the Cité de la Musique in Paris (2007).
As a musician and DJ, he gives improvised performances and mixes modified vinyl records on turntables, layering various musical genres into a dissonant collage of altered sounds. He participates in many recordings and performs in places like the Knitting Factory and the Kitchen in New York. He has collaborated with various groups of musicians, including Sonic Youth, the Kronos Quartet, Otomo Yoshihide, Ikue Mori, John Zorn and Arto Lindsay.
